BEHIND THE SCENES

A place for client examples, editorial stories, and behind the scenes...

Capture your pregnancy in silver and sunlight.

Double exposures in wet plate photography are a bit more of a challenge than in other mediums, most notably because of the time constraint. It is called "wet plate" collodion because every step must be completed before the plate dries out. Depending on the weather, this gives the photographer 10-15 minutes from first pour to develope.

For this shot I first posed the subject against a translucent white backdrop with powerful strobes behind. This gave me a silhouette of the subject - an unexposed area in which place the second exposure of flowers against a black backdrop. Pretty simple. Just do it fast!

Wedding and engagement portrait sessions in tintype are particularly fun! Tintypes last basically forever. Knowing that these plates will be handed down to their future children, and looked at in amazement by their future grandchildren and great-grandchildren, gives these sessions a particularly magical quality. Wet Plates from the civil war, barring any physical damage, look exactly the same today as they did in the 1860s.

Many congratulations to Melody and Quentin who visited my studio a couple of weeks ago. They are a gorgeous couple getting married this fall. I had the honor of creating with them a tintype they plan to use in their wedding announcements. It turned out great! And let's be honest here, there is something about tassels and a cowboy hat that just makes everything better.

Are you going to be near Denver or Boulder prior to your wedding?? Stop by the studio for an engagement portrait session with Colorado's premier wet plate tintype portrait photographer . We can shoot indoors with studio lights like this shot, or outdoors under the pine trees with natural light.

Engagement Portrait Photographer Denver Boulder

I had the distinct honor of photographing a newlywed couple both with and without their clothes on! What better way is there to archive your nuptials than make them permanent with silver and sunlight? And why shoot digital, with paper prints that will only fade and yellow with time, or disappear forever into the cloud, when you can sit for wet plate collodion session that will literally outlast you and many generations of your descendants?

Meet Kaitlyn and Jesse. They visited my studio just a few days after they tied the knot. They wanted shots in their formal wear, and shots out of their formal wear! We started outside under the pines as the sun was getting low on the horizon, then moved indoors for something a bit more vulnerable and intimate.

Are you looking for a tintype boudoir photographer in the Denver or Boulder, Colorado area? Come visit me in the mountains for a studio session, or hire The Photographic Van for a boudoir session at your own home. We can shoot digital if you'd like, but I, of course, recommend wet plate collodion tintype!
