BEHIND THE SCENES

A place for client examples, editorial stories, and behind the scenes...

It was a day of high winds and snow flurries in South Chicago, but Congressman Bobby Rush was willing enough to dodge cars and brave the cold with me to make this tintype portrait in front of the Statue of the Great Northern Migration. Bobby Rush has been a pastor, activist and / or congressman in Chicago for decades. He co-founded the Illinois chapter of the Black Panther Party, and after chairman Fred Hampton was assassinated by the local government and police, Rush advocated for returning the favor saying, "Black people have been on the defensive for all these years. The trend now is not to wait to be attacked. We advocate offensive violence against the power structure." In 1974 he left the Black Panthers stating, "We started glorifying thuggery and drugs... [but] I don't repudiate any of my involvement in the Panther party—it was part of my maturing." He has since become a born-again Christian and dedicated much of his life to non-violence.

Stopped by Thunder in the Hill Country Biker Rally outside of Bandera, Texas and found this interesting fellow. As a kid I always dreamed of riding in one of these "spheres of death". What better way is there to learn about physics? Centrifugal force, inertia, gravity... how to fix a broken femur...

It's the critters that worry me. They can't climb walls. Humans can and they do. What are the deer supposed to do without passports or green cards?

Driving through Brownsville on my way back from the Rio Grande, I stopped to take some tintypes of The Wall. The tires are dragged behind Border Patrol SUVs to wipe out old footprints so they can detect when new folks have crossed over the wall.

Technically I don't think I was supposed to be on this road, but no one told me to leave, even when the Border Patrol stopped to ask what I was doing.

I would like to go back down there are make portraits in this setting.
